Figuring the floral
— Sanford Biggers

CONTACT US
A flower’s life cycle of budding, blooming and pollinating, as well as its process of decay, strongly echoes the human condition. The exhibition Figuring the Floral features artists who apply this symbolism to their work—touching on race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexual orientation, aging and other facets of identity. Reflecting on the site-specificity of these works exhibited amid the flourishing gardens of Wave Hill, Curator of Visual Arts Eileen Jeng Lynch notes how the exhibition is enhanced by the visible and tangible connections with flora on the grounds.

Produced in stone, a natural resource that is millions of years old, they share a unifying element that provides them with a deep, timeless and resilient character, contradicting the chaos and superficiality of the contemporary world.

DOOR, OPEN, SHUT
— Kaari Upson

CONTACT US
The presentation at Kunstverein Hannover is American artist Kaari Upson’s (b. 1972 in San Bernadino, lives in Los Angeles) first institutional exhibition in Germany. Upson’s multilayered sculptural, drawing-based, and cinematic works explore traumas rooted in incisive personal experiences.
In prototypical domestic spaces, the artist draws on her own past by molding it in latex, painting it, and finally transferring it to the exhibition space as (abstract) sculptures. Her drawings represent psychologically-charged worlds that bear witness to traumatic memories and experiences.

Go Back the Way You Came
— Kaari Upson

CONTACT US
For her first institutional solo exhibition in Europe, Kaari Upson (*1972) presents a new body of wood and latex sculptures that continues her ongoing exploration of both the figure of the mother and the uncanny double. The US-American artist casts, cuts down, or replicates natural and architectural elements that she grew up with, fusing home and mother, body and object, desire and trauma. The gripping result interrogates family, consumer culture, and “Americanness,” all while literally eviscerating parts of her childhood environment to do so.

TUTU
— Olivier Mosset

CONTACT US
Since the mid-1960s, Olivier Mosset (b. 1944 in Bern, lives in Tucson, Arizona) has been one of the most radical representatives of a contemporary manner of painting that undermines the ideal of artistic originality by means of objectivity and seriality. Taking the question of what painting is and how it works as a starting point, he has produced a multifaceted oeuvre of monochromes and abstract geometric works that reject any mystifying attribution of meaning, as exemplified by the pieces now presented at Museum Haus Konstruktiv.

The large-scale canvases in the exhibition are almost homage to German romanticism and the works of great masters of the time such as Caspar David Friedrich and Arnold Bocklin – whom lived in Rome and interpreted the world of ancient roman classicism with a hint of demure and nostalgic northern soul.

Symbols as much as structures conceived for everyday inhabitation, these sculptures draw an arc from the insular and individual to the open-ended and collective, from the overtly erotic to the sublimated joy of togetherness.

Together, they represent the further, articulated chapter of the project – launched in 2013 and organised in various intermediate chapters – devoted by Madre to the gradual formation of the permanent collection. This chapter also confirms the main directions in which the Madre collection has been heading in the last five years: on the one hand, the collection tells the story of avant-garde culture, with specific reference to what has happened in Naples and Campania over the last fifty years on the other hand, it explores the present and offers a hypothetical vision of the future, through the inclusion of artists that have responded with new works and commissions to this history.
